Tank at Atlanta Airport

Type of Project:

Maintenance painting of tank.

Project Description:

Power wash clean, spot prime and overcoat the tank, pipe fittings and the ends of connecting pipes with Termarust.

Reason project was undertaken:

Existing coating on the structure was failing and crevice corrosion and pack rust was developing.

Name and location of facility:

Hartsfield Airport, Atlanta, Georgia. USA

Project start and completion dates:

August 28-29, 2001

Service Environment:

Temperature: +15F to +110F (-9C to 43C), moisture, occasional snow and ice, and some jet aircraft fuel in the air.

Surface Preparation: Methods, degree of cleaning, profile:

Methods, degree of cleaning: 5,000 psi High Pressure water cleaning with zero degree rotating tip and a 4 - 6 inch standoff to a SSPC-SP12 - WJ4-SC2.

Coating application methods, equipment:

Termarust 2200 (RAVCS) Penetrant/Sealer - small squirt bottle, brush and Termarust 2100 (RAVCS) Primer/Topcoat - Airless spray.

Coating system, number of coats, dry film thickness per coat, etc.:

Application of Termarust 2200 (RAVCS) Penetrant/Sealer into joints and connections - followed immediately with (wet on wet) application of Termarust 2100 (RAVCS) Primer/Topcoat.
Caulk coat (stripe coat) all joints and connections with 10 mils DFT Termarust 2100 (RAVCS) Penetrant/Sealer. On all bear metal and tightly adhered, contaminant free rusted surfaces apply spot prime @ 5mils DFT Termarust 2100(RAVCS) Primer/Topcoat, and then overcoat all areas with 5mils DFT Termarust 2100 (RAVCS) Primer/Topcoat.

Safety and Environmental Protection Measures:

A tarp system was used during power washing - to keep debris and overspray of Termarust from a nearby tank.

Unusual Job conditions:

None - the tank was in an open area on airport property.

Evidence of good performance:

After one year of service the coating is performing as expected - with minimum corrosion and delamination of the existing tightly adhered paint.

Why Termarust was used:

The owner wanted a coating with a 5-year warranty and an expected 25-year service life - for this tank.
