Decarie Expressway
Type of Project:
Rehabilitation and coating of expressway overpasses.
Project Description:
Cleaning and coating of failing metalized girders using High Pressure Water Cleaning (HPWC) and Ultra High Pressure Water Jetting to preserve the structures.
Reason project was undertaken:
The metalizing had failed on the lower half of the girder but the owner wanted to preserve the removing metalizing and reduce cost.
Name and location of facility:
Five overpasses on the Decarie Expressway, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Project start and completion dates:
May - November 2001
Service Environment:
Severe chloride Sulfonate and nitrate contaminated steel in a very moist environment with low airflow because the expressway is an open tunnel design.
Surface Preparation: Methods, degree of cleaning, profile:
All surfaces were prepared to a SSPC-SP12-WJ4-SC2 using 5,000 PSI, with a zero degree rotation tip at a 4 inch stand off. Then the rusted areas were prepared to a SSPC-SP12-WJ3 L to M before coating.
Coating application methods, equipment:
Airless spray and brush.
Coating system, number of coats, dry film thickness per coat, etc.:
Termarust 2200 RAVCS Penetrant/Sealer was applied to all joints. Termarust 2100 RAVCS Primer/Topcoat was applied at 20 mils DFT in all pack rusted joints and connections, 10 mils DFT applied to tightly adhered rust and 5 mils DFT was applied to tightly adhered metalizing.
Safety and Environmental Protection Measures:
Work was done at night from mobile platforms that had to be removed everyday to allow traffic during the day.
Unusual Job conditions:
The job was only be done at night with limited hours of lane closure.
Evidence of good performance:
To date the coating has been in place for two years, well adhered with no rusting.
Why Termarust was used:
The single coat system allowed the contractor to move quickly. The owner had tried a high-energy epoxy urethane coating system previously and it had delaminated in less than a year.
