Edmonton High Level Bridge

Type of Project:

Structural rehabilitation of bridge and application of improved steel coating system.

Project Description:

Structural repairs (replace 50 tons of steel), remove all lead-based paint, apply improved coating system to steel, and resurface concrete deck and sidewalks.

Reason project was undertaken:

The structural load capacity was reduced by pack rust and corrosion of steel, failure of the protective coating system and deterioration of R/C deck.

Name and location of facility:

Edmonton High Level Bridge (109th Street Bridge), Edmonton, Alberta Canada

Project start and completion dates:

April 16, 1995 - November 12, 1995
Four bent legs were completed in 1996

Service Environment:

Temperature ranges, -40C to +40C, snow, salt and moisture.
Bridge is located in the North Saskatchewan River Valley.

Surface Preparation: Methods, degree of cleaning, profile:

Sandblast to a SSPC-SP 6, 2 mil profile.

Coating application methods, equipment:

Airless spray and brush.

Coating system, number of coats, dry film thickness per coat, etc.:

Termarust 2010 RI Flash Rust Inhibitor +.25 mils. followed by application of Termarust 2200 Penetrant Sealer in all joints and connections and immediate application of a single 10 mil coating of Termarust 2100 (RAVCS®) Primer/Topcoat.

Safety and Environmental Protection Measures:

Class 1 Negative Air Containment. Bridge is located in downtown Edmonton where it passes over a river and a park.

Unusual Job conditions:

The owner required a 5-year coating warranty on joints and connections (a warranty of this nature was not common at the time of the project). The bridge had pack rusted joints up to 2-1/2 inches wide, and severe storms damaged containment and slowed down the progress of the work. Termarust's single coat system allowed the contractor to makeup the time and complete the project on schedule.

Evidence of good performance:

Five year warranty on the coating (that included joints and connections) has expired with no claims against Termarust or the contractor.

Why Termarust was used:

Termarust and the contractor provided a 5-year warranty on leakage from pack rusted joints and connections and a minimum 25-year coating system service life.
