Ericsson Water Tank
Type of Project:
Reclamation of rusting water tank exterior to insure structural integrity and clean up cosmetics.
Project Description:
High pressure water cleaning of tower with 5,000 PSI water to remove surface contaminants and apply a coating and lettering to the structure.
Reason project was undertaken:
To preserve the tower, stop the corroding joints and connections and cover the graffiti and make it cosmetically acceptable.

Project start and completion dates:
September to November 2001.
Service Environment:
Urban chlorides Sulfonate and nitrate contamination.
Surface Preparation: Methods, degree of cleaning, profile:
5,000 PSI HPWC with a zero degree rotating tip and a 4 inch stand off. Surface preparation was to SSPC-SP12-WJ4-SC2 standard.
Coating application methods, equipment:
Airless spray and brush.
Coating system, number of coats, dry film thickness per coat, etc.:
Termarust TR 2200 RAVCS Penetrant Sealer in all joints and connections Termarust TR 2100 RAVCS Primer Topcoat, at 10 mils DFT on bare metal and rusted surfaces and 5 mils DFT on painted surfaces.
Safety and Environmental Protection Measures:
The contract chose not to use containment and was careful to spray on quiet days.
Unusual Job conditions:
Busy urban area with 10,000 cars parked in the area.
Evidence of good performance:
Two years into the five-year warranty, no rust is leaking from joints and connections.
Why Termarust was used:
Cost was an issue for the owner but they still wanted a good, long-term performance coating and a 5 year warranty against leaking from the pack rusted joints and connections.
