Fort Saskatchewan Bridge
Type of Project:
Repairing of two-lane deck truss bridge.
Project Description:
Partial removal and overcoating of existing lead based paint system.
Reason project was undertaken:
The existing paint system was failing and crevice corrosion and pack rust was developing in joints and connections.
Name and location of facility:
Alberta Transportation and Utilities, Fort Saskatchewan Bridge, Alberta, Canada Highway 15 South at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada.
Project start and completion dates:
April 92 - October 92
Service Environment:
Chemical / Industrial, over a river with road salt.
Surface Preparation: Methods, degree of cleaning, profile:
Bottom of the deck truss up 9ft. SSPC-SP6, remaining structure SSPC-SP7.
Coating application methods, equipment:
Airless spray and brush.
Coating system, number of coats, dry film thickness per coat, etc.:
Wet coat Termarust 2200 (RAVCS) Penetrant Sealer in joints and connections,
5 mils DFT Spot Primer of Termarust 2100 (RAVCS®) Primer/Topcoat on bare metal, 5 mils DFT overcoat of Termarust 2100 (RAVCS®) Primer/Topcoat.
Note: All coats applied wet on wet.
Safety and Environmental Protection Measures:
Platforms and containment were used to protect the river and land from contamination.
Unusual Job conditions:
SSPC-SP7 caused fracture of existing coating and spec had to be increased.
All coating operations and storage had to take place off the bridge structure.
Coating was pumped from the river bank storage area through 925 feet of paint line to three guns.
Evidence of good performance:
Five-year warranty on the coating (that included joints and connections) has expired with no claims against Termarust.
Why Termarust was used:
Termarust and the contractor provided a 5-year warranty on leakage from pack rusted joints and connections and a minimum 25-year coating system service life.
