Zanardi Rapids Bridge

Type of Project:

Structural rehabilitation of truss bridge and application of improved steel coating system.

Project Description:

Repair of structural members, partial removal of lead base paint, and application of a long lasting coating system for an area 15-feet above the rail deck.

Reason project was undertaken:

To replace existing deteriorating coating on steel - to preserve the only rail link to the port of Prince Rupert, B. C.

Name and location of facility:

Zanardi Rapids Bridge, Riddley Island Terminal, Prince Rupert, B. C. Canada.

Project start and completion dates:

June 92 - October 92

Service Environment:

Severe seacoast / Industrial

Surface Preparation: Methods, degree of cleaning, profile:

SSPC-SP 6 and SSPC-SP 11. The topcoat required removal with chipping hammers because the contractor could not use an abrasive with sharp edges due to fish habitat. Lead graphite coating was removed with round garnet that was approved by the Canadian Department of Fisheries.

Coating application methods, equipment:

Airless spray and brush

Coating system, number of coats, dry film thickness per coat, etc.:

Termarust 2010 RI Flash Rust Inhibitor, wet coat + .25 mils. Wet coat Termarust 2200 (RAVCS®) Penetrant Sealer in all joints and connections.
Single coat, 10 mils DFT of Termarust 2100 (RAVCS®) Primer/Topcoat on all surfaces.

Safety and Environmental Protection Measures:

Structure was contained by a platform and permanent side tarps. Both ends functioned as curtains to allow the trains to pass through.

Unusual Job conditions:

Substrate would become contaminated with salt spray almost immediately after surface preparation. The solution was to use a Termarust 2010 RI (RAVCS®) Flash Rust Inhibitor every two hours to protect the surface from salt contamination.

Evidence of good performance:

The structure has been in service for eight-years with no deterioration, and all pack rusted joints and connections are stable.

Why Termarust was used:

Termarust and the contractor provided a 5-year warranty on leakage from pack rusted joints and connections and a minimum 25-year coating system service life.
